What We Know about Office 2019 So Far

Microsoft has been very secretive about its upcoming release of the new Office 2019. So far, only the barest details have been confirmed by the company, which has led to much speculating and uncertainty among users who wish to find out if Office 2019 is the right product for them. Based off of information released by Microsoft, as well as some historical data about Office, some certainties and other strong assumptions can be used to get a fairly clear picture of what Office 2019 has to offer.

If you are interested in getting Office 2019 for your home, study, or work use, be sure to purchase it at as soon as it is released. If you want to know more about Office 2019 now, read more about it below.

Release Dates

As with everything else, Microsoft has been elusive about the exact date for the release of Office 2019. Instead of precise dates to mark in the calendar, Microsoft has stated the whole Office 2019 suite will be available sometime in the second half of 2018. Beta versions of all the programs will be available in the second quarter of the year, so sometime in spring.

However, despite the lack of definitive confirmation, it is likely that the Office 2019 rollout will mirror the Office 2016 rollout. That saw Office 2016 for Mac released in July 2015 and Office 2016 for PC released in September 2015. As with 2016, Office 365 users will likely get access to the new suite first, followed by those who wish to purchase a new perpetual edition.

Expected Features

Microsoft has spoken directly about very few of the certainly large number of new features in Office 2019. Of those that are known, Excel is set to get new formulas and charts for even more impressive data computation and analysis. PowerPoint will have new Morph and Zoom animations. And, as some MS Office 2019 screenshots have shown, Word will have more advanced inking features, which will account for sensitivity and tilt with the stylus.

There have also been general promises of increased security and ease of use. However, it is likely that many new features will go much beyond the above improvements. The overall Microsoft vision is almost certainly set to become the Microsoft Office 2019 vision. That vision includes: bringing people together, living smarter, friction free creativity, and fluid mobility.

With those guiding principles, it seems almost certain that Office 2019 will include features that improve collaboration and communication in both the home and the business setting. There is also likely to be a focus on an improved and more intuitive design. Finally, further connections between the desktop, the laptop, the phone, and the tablet are sure to be a priority.

Expected Versions

Microsoft has said nothing about releasing new versions of Office 2019, and based off recent Office history, it is likely little will change from those versions released for Office 2016. That would mean Office 2019 will include these perpetual suites for PC:

  • Home and Student
  • Home and Business
  • Standard
  • Professional
  • Professional Plus

And for Mac:

  • Home and Student
  • Home and Business
  • Standard

In both the PC and Mac version, it is safest to assume Home and Student will continue to offer only the core programs of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote, with Home and Business also including Outlook. Standard will likely remain a volume license version. As before, it is safest to assume that programs such as Publisher and Access will only be available on PC, and therefore the Professional and Professional Plus suites will remain only available for PC.

Among the Office 365 options, the same suites as were previously available will likely continue to be on offer:

  • Personal-The core programs, plus Outlook, and on PC, Publisher and Access. For one user.
  • Home-The same as Personal, but for up to 5 users on 5 devices.
  • Business-The same as Home, but with a business focus.
  • Business Essentials-A suite of online communication focused programs without the standard desktop Office programs.
  • Business Premium-A combination of Business and Business Essentials.
  • ProPlus-Similar to Business but designed for large companies with many users.
  • Enterprise E1-Similar to Business Essentials but designed for large companies with many users.
  • Enterprise E3-Everything in Business Premium, plus more security and more features. Designed for large companies with many users.
  • Enterprise E5-Everything in E3, plus business analytics. Designed for large companies with many users.

While Microsoft may expand this list, it is unlikely any will be removed.

Expected System Requirements

The exact system requirements for Office 2019 remain unknown, other than the fact that PC users will need to be running Windows 10 to run the new Office.

It is likely, though, that the requirements will be similar, or perhaps only slightly more advanced, than those already required for Office 2016 and Office 365. For PC, those are:

  • 1 GHz process
  • 1 GB RAM for 32-bit or 2 GB for 64-bit
  • 16 GB free disk space
  • A DirectX 9 graphs card
  • A Microsoft account
  • Internet access

For Mac, those are:

  • Intel process
  • 4 GB RAM
  • 6 GB free disk space
  • HFS+ hard disk format
  • 1280 x 800 screen resolution
  • OS X 10.10 or later operating system
  • A Microsoft account
  • Internet access

Other Changes

One of the other major changes for Office 2019 will be the new limits on mainstream support. In previous editions, that support was offered for 10 years, now it will only be 5. That means Office 2019 help and major updates will only run for half the time they did for Office 2016.
